Donations (but not to EFoJ)

One of our rituals is what some call “tithing”. Specifically, if you are able, set aside at least 10% of your income to help others. Use this money however you feel best allows you to live Individual Tenet 2, i.e. “Help those in need.” Jesus taught us to reach out to those in marginalized groups to show them love and support, and we encourage our members to do the same.

However, you must be careful where you donate to. For example, consider the case of a non-profit organization that claims to support the working poor, but then spends the equivalent of six median household incomes on their CEO’s compensation package. Perhaps their leadership’s heart is not sufficiently focused on serving rather than enriching. We encourage our members to investigate non-profits before donating to them. Legitimate charities will file 990 tax returns that show where they spend their money and will let you decide if they are an organization that focuses on serving, or an organization that focuses on fundraising.
